What to Know

Critics Consensus

Overloaded action and a cliched villain take the focus away from otherwise strong performers and resonant themes, making X-Men: Apocalypse a middling chapter of the venerable superhero franchise.

X-Men: Apocalypse | Rotten Tomatoes (1) Ariana Vives Bitch Media It wasn't terrible, and I don't think it entirely deserves its dismal 47 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. But it should serve as a wake-up call regarding the franchise's future direction. Feb 10, 2021 Full Review X-Men: Apocalypse | Rotten Tomatoes (2) Antonia Quirke Financial Times The set-up is sometimes quite intriguing. Especially when it features Michael Fassbender as Magneto (massively magnetic). Rated: 3/5 Dec 27, 2016 Full Review X-Men: Apocalypse | Rotten Tomatoes (3) Dwight Brown National Newspaper Publishers Association Compared to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (a convoluted snore) or Captain America: Civil War (bombastic and contrived) X-Men: Apocalypse is the one that's worth the price of admission. Nov 8, 2016 Full Review X-Men: Apocalypse | Rotten Tomatoes (4) Cory Woodroof For the Win (USA Today) You’ll have a fine time watching it, but you won’t remember much of it afterward. Jul 22, 2024 Full Review X-Men: Apocalypse | Rotten Tomatoes (5) Grant Watson Fiction Machine Much of the film is spent either reminding and recalling previous events in other films, or foreshadowing events that are due to happen in a future sequel. The sheer quantity of character threads fracture the film’s structure. Rated: 6/10 Jul 19, 2023 Full Review X-Men: Apocalypse | Rotten Tomatoes (6) Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies It’s hard to ignore how the film turns a blind eye to several glaring plot problems. I mean am I silly to think they might address the 10 million people killed when a city is leveled? Rated: 3/5 Aug 20, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews

Oaklee D The only reason I gave this film 3 stars is because I like this movie even if it is a bit of a high rating I'm just a sucker for a superhero flick good or bad. Now this film wanted to and tried HARD to be the X-Men franchises Infinity War / Endgame but it ends up feeling like a cheap imitation. I thought that the main villain was never any real threat. He was supposed to be on par with Thanos, Galactus and others but it was like he carried no real weight. All in all I did enjoy this film but you may or may not depending on how familiar you are with source material, not the worst I've ever seen but it's not great either. Rated 3/5 Stars • Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/29/24 Full Review Justin W This one in definitely marks X-men's debut. Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/26/24 Full Review Nick R It has it's moments, but is mostly just a boring film that does terrible on the promise of Apocalypse. Rated 3/5 Stars • Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/19/24 Full Review Jason R Lazy writing. When you have villains that can do almost anything, it really takes the interest out. Also...why did he have to have minions surrounding him if he was all powerful After two hours, we find out that all the X-Men needed was Jean to blow him up. I mean....what? Production value was good. It was entertaining, but far from being a quality movie with great writing. Lazily assembled. Didn't really add to the franchise. Rated 3/5 Stars • Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/18/24 Full Review Venegas F I will never understand many comic and movie critics, this movie delivered in all levels. Amazing acting, story telling, and visuals. A true fan of this franchise, I hope for more. Amazing cast!!! Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/17/24 Full Review Spencer S X-MEN: APOCALYPSE is far and away the most schlocky X-Men movie, for better or worse. It comes away feeling like a single run comic book story more than its predecessors. It doesn't worry about character introductions or going out of its way to explain a character's motives, just constantly throws more schlock at us for the entire run time, and in the end I had a blast with it. Feels like a solid follow up to Days of Future Past. I remember not liking this one too much on release but upon rewatching every single one in order, APOCALYPSE turns out feeling more like an X-Men story than a couple others. Oscar Isaac is wasted by burying him underneath pounds of makeup yet his characterization works great as Apocalypse. Love the 80s setting even though they barely do anything with it. Quicksilver scene alone makes it worth the watch. Rated 4/5 Stars • Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/16/24 Full Review Read all reviews
