FCC Commissioner MICHAEL O’RIELLY has sent a letter to RECORDING INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA (RIAA) Chairman/CEO MITCH GLAZIER asking about payola in the music industry.
O’RIELLY, citing industry press reports and stressing that “federal law is clear” that any payment for the broadcast of any content must be disclosed, asked GLAZIER for his “help in ensuring that the practice be discontinued” and expressed “sincere hope that recent allegations are being overstated or misrepresented.”
“My primary goal,” O’RIELLY wrote, “is to get to the bottom of existing industry practices to determine whether the law is being followed or whether any problematic conduct must be addressed.” O’RIELLY concluded by asking for a reply by the end of SEPTEMBER.
